How to Solve a Murder Mystery Event

1. Remember… Everyone’s a Suspect (Including You!)

The murder mystery game starts as soon as you walk through the door. This means that everyone is a suspect — maybe even you. The best way to solve the mystery is to talk with as many guests and suspects you can. Certain people will have been assigned ‘suspect’ roles or have goals they need to accomplish before dinner is over.

2. Dress for the Theme if possible.

Each Murder Mystery is a unique story and original plots. However, the mystery will feel more immersive once you get into character. Arrive at dinner in clothing that matches the theme or period. While most party venues don’t require you to dress up for the murder mystery dinner, you’ll have more fun if you do.

3. Eavesdrop

Under normal circumstances, it’s rude to eavesdrop. However, attending a murder mystery dinner party isn’t “normal circumstances.” Sometimes the best way to find out secrets is to eavesdrop on other characters. Finding out a juicy secret can be a great way to blackmail someone into telling you what they know. Just make sure no one is eavesdropping on you.

4. Keep Your Wits about You

It’s easy to get distracted by all the food on your plate and wine in your glass and so much more. However, you’ll need to stay focused if you want to discover the murderer. Before the night is over, you’ll also need to determine how, when, and why the murder occurred.

Don’t be fooled by the idle chat at your table, or in the bathroom… it’s all part of the game. Keep your secrets close to the chest and only share information when it’s strategic. When you volunteer information make sure others are more likely to follow suit. Use this to your advantage.

5. Don’t Take Offense of Suspects or other game players.

Remember that during a murder mystery party, people will be playing assigned roles. If someone is rude to you or even accuses you of murder… it most likely has to do with the character they’re playing rather than their personality. Instead of getting offended, ask yourself why would a person act like that or behave in such a way… are they the murderer? Are they hiding a scandalous secret important to the plot? It’s your job to find out and have a killer time doing so.
